3D product advertising: process, timeline, and preparation

How to commission a 3D product film: brief, script, modeling, animation, rendering, platform adaptations, schedule, and revision control.

When 3D is stronger than a shoot

CGI is useful before a product exists, for internal views, impossible transformations, controlled fluids, or many adaptations. It can keep lighting and material consistent across a campaign.

Live action may be faster for people, naturally imperfect food, or documentary trust. A hybrid can combine real context with a 3D product. Choose by communication task, not fashion.

What belongs in the brief

Define audience, one primary message, and the action after viewing. Supply CAD or all-angle photos, dimensions, materials, current packaging, and prohibited distortions. Agree how far stylization may depart from the actual product.

  • goal, audience, and channels;
  • primary product characteristic;
  • references with rationale;
  • model, packaging, and brand assets;
  • required copy, disclosures, and languages;
  • formats, durations, and media deadline.

Production and approval gates

3D production is a dependency chain: a script mistake flows into modeling and becomes expensive after rendering. Approve intermediate evidence, not only the final film.

Design a family of formats

Google Ads and Meta placements use different aspect ratios. Product, text, and safe zones behave differently in vertical and 16:9 frames. Decide during storyboarding which scenes can recompose for 9:16, 1:1, and 16:9.

Create several durations: a short hook, a main version, and reusable product fragments. This extends the production without forcing every message into one film.

Truthfulness and version control

The FTC states a basic principle: advertising must be truthful and non-deceptive. CGI does not remove that duty. Do not depict volume, results, contents, or capabilities a product lacks without clear stylization and required explanation.

Keep one current source for packaging and models. Treat mid-production product changes as controlled change requests with impact on approved scenes.

Pelmeni: product as the hero

In the Pelmeni 3D case, material, camera motion, and rhythm create a memorable product image without an overloaded story. One clear idea is stronger than a pile of effects.

Choose one hero action early: the product behavior viewers should remember. It directs modeling, simulation, sound, and editing and adapts well into short formats.

How to compare studio proposals

Compare production boundaries, not only totals: existing models, scene count, unique simulations, resolution, formats, sound ownership, revision rounds, and source-file handoff.

  • approved script and deliverable list;
  • stage-by-stage approval calendar;
  • revision boundaries;
  • platform specifications;
  • rights to music, models, and outputs;
  • archive and future-adaptation rules.
FAQ

Common questions

How long does a 3D product film take?

A simple short film may take several weeks; complex models and simulations take longer. A dependable schedule follows the script, shot list, and format list.

What drives cost most?

Unique scenes, model and material complexity, simulations, render quality, adaptations, and late changes.

Can production start without a 3D model?

Yes, a model can be built from drawings and photos as a separate stage. Accurate dimensions and samples reduce mismatch risk.

Do Reels and YouTube need separate versions?

Usually yes for composition and legibility. Simple cropping often loses the product or copy; plan adaptations in the storyboard.
